Quick answer: AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews now pull answers from YouTube more than from most websites. To get your SaaS videos cited, put them on YouTube with a question-style title, a clean transcript, chapters, and a short text summary on your own site with VideoObject schema. Post one video a week for about three months and the citations start to appear.
Why does this matter now?
In 2026, when someone asks an AI tool “what is the best way to explain our software”, the answer often comes with a link to a video. A study reported by Adweek found YouTube is cited in about 16 percent of AI answers, ahead of Reddit at 10 percent (source). YouTube also shows up in almost 30 percent of Google AI Overview citations. Software videos do better than most: SaaS videos are cited at around 7 percent versus 3 percent for other industries.
Put simply: a good explainer video is now a way to get into AI answers, not just a way to look nice on your homepage.
What makes an AI tool pick your video?
AI models cannot “watch” a video the way you do. They read the words around it. So the text matters more than the pictures. Five things do most of the work:
- A question title. “How does invoice automation work?” beats “Product overview v2”.
- A clean transcript. Upload your own, not the auto one. Fix product names and numbers.
- Chapters. Timestamps with plain labels: 0:00 The problem, 0:15 How it works, 0:45 Results.
- A text summary on your site. Embed the video on a page with a 100 to 200 word answer above it, so the AI has something to quote.
- VideoObject schema. This is a small piece of code that tells Google “there is a video here, this is what it is about”. We cover it in video SEO for SaaS.
Which videos should you make first?
Start with the questions your sales team hears every week. Each one becomes a 60 to 90 second video:
- “What does your product do?” – a SaaS explainer video.
- “How does feature X work?” – a short app demo of real screens.
- “Who is it for?” – a talking-head video from the founder.
- “How is it different from Y?” – a simple comparison video.
Animated explainers and founder videos both work, because both give you a transcript. The point is the words, so write the script like an answer.
How often should you post?
The teams seeing citations post one video a week for about 12 weeks. That is enough for the AI models to see a pattern: this channel answers questions about this topic. You do not need to shoot 12 videos. One production can give you the main explainer plus cut-downs, which we explain in turning one video into 15 assets.
A simple checklist
- Video on YouTube, public, question in the title.
- Custom transcript uploaded and checked.
- Chapters added.
- Same video embedded on a page on your site with a short written answer.
- VideoObject schema on that page.
- Link to the page from your homepage or a related article.
- Repeat weekly.
Quick questions
Do I need YouTube, or can I host on my own site only?
Use both. YouTube is what the AI tools read. Your own page is what they link to.
Does video length matter for AI citations?
Less than you think. Clear structure matters more. Keep explainers at 60 to 90 seconds; see our length guide.
How long until I see results?
Usually two to three months of steady posting. Check Search Console and ask ChatGPT your own questions once a fortnight.
