Quick answer: Product Hunt only accepts YouTube links for video, and roughly half of Product of the Day winners include one. Make it 30 to 60 seconds, open on the real product within 3 seconds, skip the logo intro, design it to work with the sound off, and upload it as a public YouTube video a week before launch, not on the day.

Does a video help on Product Hunt?

Yes. About 53 percent of Product of the Day winners since 2021 included a video (source). The video sits at the top of your listing and is the first thing most visitors click. A weak video does not just fail to help; it makes people scroll past.

What are the technical rules?

  • YouTube links only. Vimeo, Loom and MP4 uploads are not accepted for the video slot.
  • Public or unlisted, never private. Private videos show a black box.
  • 16:9 for the gallery. Make a 9:16 cut separately for social on launch day.
  • Thumbnail matters. The video shows a still until clicked. Design a custom thumbnail with the product and one line of text.
  • Upload early. A few days before, so it is processed and ready.

What should the video show?

  1. Seconds 0 to 3: the product doing the thing. Not your logo, not a sunrise.
  2. Seconds 3 to 15: the problem in one line and who it is for.
  3. Seconds 15 to 45: two or three real features, on real screens.
  4. Seconds 45 to 60: the offer. “Free for early users”, “50 percent off for hunters”.

Keep it under 60 seconds. Product Hunt visitors are browsing dozens of launches; they will not watch a two-minute story.

Should it be animated or screen-recorded?

Either works, but polish matters more here than on your own site because you are being compared side by side with every other launch. A clean animated app demo stands out. If you use screen capture, zoom into the actions and hide the clutter.

What else should be ready on launch day?

  • Three to five vertical cuts for LinkedIn, X and TikTok.
  • A 10-second GIF of the best moment for the comments and for your maker post.
  • A short founder clip saying why you built it.

All of these come out of one production. We cover the full plan in SaaS product launch video strategy.

Quick questions

Can I reuse my homepage explainer?

Yes, if it opens on the product fast. If it starts with a 10-second story, cut a launch version that starts at the product.

Do I need voice-over?

It helps, but design the video so it works muted. Most people will not turn the sound on.

How far ahead should I order the video?

Three to four weeks before launch. Ours take 10 to 15 working days plus your review time.
